Choose and buy the skin is not easy, especially for non-experts. With this short guide we hope to offer our customers, especially to those who buy online, a great help to choose the product best suited to their project.

The intended use

First you have to ask yourself for what purpose you intend to use the skin: taking into account the size and intended use of the object that is intended to create. It is essential to evaluate the consistency, the strength and softness of the material: the split calf , for example, is more suitable for shoes and technical articles, the ovine skins, softer, they are ideal for making clothing or confort shoes.

The dimensions

Usually we express measurements in square meters (m2): one square meter is equivalent to about 10 square feet. Once made the object project to be implemented, the measures must be taken with care and always buy a 5% more material, because a minimal waste is inevitable.

Flower or crust?

The flower is in the top of the skin, the outer side of the dermis, the crust instead is the flesh side, of greater hardness and resistance. With regard to the flower must distinguish between skin “full grain” whose surface has not been altered in any way and presents an appearance as natural as possible and “corrected grain”, the surface of which, however, has been subjected to a few finishing .

Finish

The skin can be subjected to various finishing processes to obtain a different final appearance.

Abraded

The skin is covered with a dye layer then brushed by hand it presents a uniform appearance and is very durable.

Aniline

It is the most valuable type of skin, made from the finest leather, as the surface is left entirely unchanged: it has a very natural look.

Laminated

The skin surface is covered with a thin foil that gives the product a shiny, metallic, glittery or carcklé depending on the type of the applied film.

Printed and embossed

The skin is printed a design that can be fancy or follow the natural weave of the surface to enhance the flower. Printing can also be embossed and imitate, for example, the typical plot of some animal skins such as python, crocodile or ostrich.

Painted

The skin is painted with lacquers and varnishes to obtain designs and color effects of infinite variety. The hand-painted skins are our specialty.

Pigmented

On the skin are applied very fine particles of pigments in suspension. Pigmented skin comes with strong colors, also it has excellent resistance to light, liquids, stains and scratches and is ideal for coatings of furniture pieces.

Suede

Suede is obtained by finishing the crust with grinder, resulting in a surface effect velvety, very soft, warm and natural.

Skin parts

Normally the skin is divided into sections, each with qualitative characteristics and different forms:

  • The sides, have an elongated shape and are used for the production of footwear and handles of bags.
  • The half hides, butts, breeches and bellies are mostly intended for the production of uppers, belts and bags.
  • The shoulders are used mainly for belts, bags and cases
